Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

Because CPS uses Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), I searched for PBIS and found an article from the Journal of Teacher Education, “Classroom-Level Positive Behavior Supports in Schools Implementing SW-PBIS: Identifying Areas for Enhancement.” I thought that the safe seat could be a part of PBIS.
While I did not find any information on the safe seat, I found this information to be applicable to my inquiry question since it has to do with behavior management. This article talks about a study on how tenets of PBIS are used at the classroom level of schools that are rated as effectively implementing PBIS school-wide. Part of this article talked about responses to student behaviors. I learned that it is best for teachers to use more specific positive reinforcements and direct responses to misbehavior rather than harsh negative responses.
In the context of the safe seat, this makes me think about when it is used to remove students from the learning environment for long periods of time in response to misbehavior. I would categorize this as a harsh response. How can a space to calm down like the safe seat be used in a direct response to misbehavior rather than harshly?
